Stories And News Latest News Happy World Smile Day! Here at Wessex Cancer Trust we know that sometimes all it takes to make your day better is a simple smile, whether it’s one you receive, or one you share. Because of this, we want to celebrate World Smile day with you and spread the importance of sharing little acts of kindness to make someone smile and brighten up their day. World Smile Day has been celebrated annually on the first Friday in October since 1999, and was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball, the creator of the iconic smiley face which has gone on to become the most recognisable symbol of good will and good cheer on the planet. Harvey believed that all of us in the world should devote one day each year to smiles and kind acts. The smiley face knows no politics, no geography and no religion, and so for at least one day each year, neither should we. After Harvey died in 2001 a Foundation was created to honour his name and memory with the slogan “improving this world, one smile at a time”. They support World Smile Day with their goal to encourage smiles and acts of kindness around the world. Small acts of kindness can mean the world to someone who is having a hard time, and turn their day around. The message of World Smile Day is ‘do an act of kindness, help one person smile’. Whether you simply compliment somebody, say a cheery hello or perform some other small act of kindness, World Smile Day is your chance to make someone’s day and improve the world through the simple power of a smile.
